Strange Conversations: Part Two Hundred and Sixty-Seven

ME: Okay, is everything packed up and ready?
NICK: Yep. We just need to get a green bag, then I can put in everything I’ve got out.
ME: So it’s not all packed up and ready.
NICK: Well, no.
ME: So do it now!
NICK: But I just need to hit a button!

I get frustrated when the reply to “Are you ready to go?”, is along the lines of “Yes, just give me 5 minutes.” Just say no, damn you, and stop giving me false hope! This sounds very similar. XD

Yes! The standard reply here is “Yes, I just need to put on shoes and socks, then find my glasses, and my wallet, and my phone.” That really doesn’t count as ready, in my book.

Or when the standard reply is just “Yes.” So you, in good faith, go out the door, down to the car & unlock it—all the while having what you think is a conversation with the person—when you realise, you are alone at the car. They are still in the house, maybe preening, maybe ‘grabbing their wallet’, maybe checking FB? So, clearly, when the answer to the question is “yes” it’s really “no”. Next time I’m going to drive away regardless. :)

I’ve never done the “walk down to the car while apparently chatting to my partner” thing, but Nick has a shocking habit of just wandering off without warning when we’re in shops, so I spend far too much time saying to strangers, “I’m terribly sorry: I thought you were my boyfriend.”
