Strange Conversations: Part Two Hundred and Seventy-Two
Posted 10 March 2010 in Strange Conversations by Catriona
What happens when Nick is web-surfing and I’m checking Facebook:
NICK: Matt Smith couldn’t be channelling Patrick Troughton harder if he tried.
ME: In what way?
NICK: Well, body language, mostly.
(Baffled pause)
ME: What are you looking at?
NICK: This.
ME: Oh. Oh!
NICK: Yes. That Matt Smith, not our Matt Smith.
ME: They should have thought of moments like this when they cast him.
Mind, it would help if we just called our Matt Smith “Matt,” but such is life.

Hmmm, just read the caption below the image, are they seriously referring to him as “Eleven”? That’s just plain stupid.

The BBC won’t be, Drew. (Nick grabbed this image off Flickr because he couldn’t link directly to the original image, for some reason.)
But it’s become a convention among some commenters on the show to refer to them (especially the Doctors of the new series) solely by the number of their regeneration. (The practice is spreading, but it seems to be largely an American convention.) I’m inclined to believe it started with the recapper from Television Without Pity, who apparently couldn’t be bothered typing “the Doctor,” but it’s pretty widespread now.
I hate it.
I really, really hate it.
What’s wrong with “the Eleventh Doctor”? It worked for us (in slightly different variations) for forty years, after all.

It is very Patrick Troughton (from the little I saw of Patrick’s Doctor). Next he’ll pull out a recorder and play an irish jig.

Also, this is not the first name clash I’ve had in recent times: I became officially known as Smithy (including on the external phone list) at work due to another Matt having first dibs on the name. But I’m happy to share my name with the Doctor, how rock and roll can you get?

I’m so glad that liking Doctor Who is officially “rock and roll.” (And how more official can it be than to hear it from Matt Smith?) When I were a lass, it was still considered a bit embarrassing to be a fan.
Well, non-fans thought we should be embarrassed by it, anyway.
Mind you, if he plays a recorder, I’m out of there.
