Conversation With My Nintendo Wii Balance Board, Part Two

Posted 28 January 2010 in by Catriona

We’ve neglected the Wii Fit over Christmas, so this morning I had the following conversation.

BALANCE BOARD: Good morning, Treena! Were you busy yesterday?
ME: (ignoring the passive-aggressive balance board)
BALANCE BOARD: By the way, what do you think of Nick’s fitness?
ME: (selecting “the same” from the limited options)
BALANCE BOARD: Oh . . . change is always more exciting, don’t you think? Maybe you just haven’t been paying enough attention to Nick!
ME: Excuse me?
BALANCE BOARD: On a side note, did you know that dogs become more motivated when their owners pay more attention to them?
ME: Oh, Nick is going to be happy that you said that.

I’m truly considering getting a Wii Fit just for the conversations

I was considering getting one for my sister, but in light of your conversations with the board, and the fact that her ability to argue with mute and inanimate objects is legendary in our family, I’ve reconsidered.

Dogs? Do you have a dog? Or does it just randomly talk about them?

I actually don’t have a dog, Melissa, but I don’t think the balance board knows that, so I’m assuming it was just some random comment that it felt would be helpful.

(Then, the next night, I found Nick chasing invisible possums out of the house, and thought, “Hmm. It is just like having a dog.”)

I do talk to inanimate objects: my former flatmates used to be quite freaked out by my pottering around the kitchen saying, “Come on, saucepan, you can boil faster than that!” But I draw the line at the balance board: it’s too passive aggressive to have a proper conversation with.
