Strange Conversations: Part One Hundred and Seventy-Five

Posted 22 July 2009 in by Catriona

ME: I have got to stop falling in love with vampires.
NICK: Oh?
ME: Yes. It’s bad for my constitution.
NICK: Did someone else just die?
ME: Oh, no. But, you know, even if these are fictional characters . . .
NICK: Yes?
ME: Well, I just feel bad whenever I fall in love with another man.

Welcome to the blog, Deb!

In the interests of protecting my own neck (so to speak), I’m not just in love with Eric. I have room in my heart for many vampires—as long as none of them are Edward Cullen or anyone out of an Anne Rice novel.

It also depends on whether you want Eric from the books or Eric from the TV series. Eric from the TV series is all yours—unless he’s wearing a singlet.

Thanks for the welcome Catriona. I must admit to having been an avid reader prior to my first comment, slightly voyeuristic I know.
The books and the tv show gave me such cognitive dissonance that I almost stopped watching the tv version bowever they have diverged so completely now that I am more comfortable regarding them as two different texts.
Tv Bill grew on me but it is book Eric to whom my heart remains true.

It’s not voyeuristic at all, Deb! It’s the nature of blogs, I think. But I love it when readers start commenting: I love this blog to be dialogic.

I’m entirely with you on True Blood, Deb. I think I’m lucky in having seen the entire first series before I read any of the books—if I’d read the books first, I think I might not have liked the series. But I love what the series is doing with aspects and characters that are comparatively under-explored in the books.

I’m with you on the vamps, too. I really never warmed to Book Bill (in fact, I find Sookie’s affection for him to be beyond naive and almost into victimhood at times), but am fond of TV Bill. But I was about halfway through the second book when I said to Nick, “Forget Bill. It’s all about Eric from now on.”

And, John? Maybe, up to about season four. If there weren’t any other vamps available.
